“It’s not about ideas. It’s about making ideas happen”-Scott Belsky

As the new Director of Integrated STEAM Education at Fair Chance Learning (FCL)   I am beyond excited to announce that we are making one of our ideas a reality.  FCL recently became The Official Canadian Partner of the Micro:bit Foundation which allows us to carry out our vision.  Our team is intrinsically motivated to inspire and assist both students and educators in relation to coding and computational thinking.  It is for this reason that we are launching the new:

What is it?

The Canadian Wide Micro:bit Challenge is designed to get more students actively involved in coding using the micro:bit in a fun and interactive manner.  What we’re looking for is students and teachers actively using their micro:bits within a creative environment.  FCL wants to celebrate your success stories and share them with the rest of the country!  If you and your students are working on something you feel is amazing we want to know about it.  Please share your unique projects with us and help create a culture of learning for all of Canada and beyond.

What else? The best part!

We are going to feature one project each month and those individuals will receive a club pack of micro:bits or compatible sensors along with being featured on our website!

How does it work?

It’s easy!

We have a fully interactive infographic here which outlines the process and contains hyperlinks to everything you need including a sample project.

All you have to do in order to be eligible is the following:

  1. Create a project using your micro:bit
  2. Share either a photo or video of your project with us on Twitter using the following hashtag #fcledu
  3. You’re done!  We will contact the featured project recipients but remember there is no limit to the number of projects you can submit!

We are thrilled to offer this platform for students to share their projects and motivate others throughout Canada.  FCL is committed to increasing both awareness and skill sets within coding and computational thinking as it is one of the most marketable 21st century skills.

In a recent report by Lydia Dishman on “Why Coding is Still the Most Important Skill of the Future”:

“Seven million job openings in 2015 were in occupations that required coding skills, and programming jobs overall are growing 12% faster than the market average”

If you have any questions please reach out to us but more importantly, get coding and have fun!
